Our Birds….Carlie & Dylon
I could talk for days about our African Grey Parrots, Carlie and Dylon. These two birds are totally awesome. I mentioned in my last post that May is my birthday month, well it is also the “Birds” (as we call them) hatch day month. Carlie’s hatch day is the 10th of May and Dylon’s is the 16th, they were 10 years old this Month. My husband calls it the month of the bulls…..I wonder why?
Carlie has been having a horrible time this year. African Greys start to mature around the age of 10, some earlier, some later (as in Dylon’s case) and I think Carlie’s biological clock is ticking. For the last several months she has been acting out nesting instincts. It is really sad as it seems the only choice she will have for a mate is going to be Dylon, (as far as we know
), and right now Carlie despises him.
This all started when they were young, at just a couple of years old Dylon was so mean to Carlie. He would bully her in different ways, he wouldn’t let her get on the perch, he would take her toys, and pick on her. Carlie never forgot this. One day, when they were around 4 or 5 years old, all of this changed. I can still remember that day so clearly. We had just bought them both new toys. They were out, sitting in different perches away from each other. Dylon flew over to her cage, went inside of it and started playing with her toy (actually, tearing it apart). Carlie was livid; she flew to her cage and pined him inside. She then knocked him off the perch and he fell to the bottom of the cage on his back. She jumped down on top of him, landing on his chest and started pecking at him. With every peck Dylon screamed at the top of his lungs.
Bob had to rescue him from Carlie. He pulled her off of Dylon and I got him up. I’ll tell you something, things have never been the same since. That was a hard lesson for Dylon to learn. He has complete respect for Carlie now. As hard as that was for him, I believe this took him down a huge notch. “Don’t mess with Momma Bird!” That’s why I say the verdic is still out on whether or not Carlie accepts Dylon as her mate. Only time will tell, and of course Mother Nature.
